Heat records set on scorching day in the Bay Area

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- It was another scorching hot day in the Bay Area, with more records broken.

ABC7's Spencer Christian reports that Oakland, the Oakland Airport, San Francisco, San Francisco International Airport, San Jose, Moffett Field, and Monterey all broke records. San Francisco hit 88, breaking a record set in 1922. And San Jose hit 94, breaking a record set in 1905.

Spencer says that shifting winds will help drop temperatures drop, especially on the coast. Despite cooler weather on the horizon, officials are closing Alum Rock Park in San Jose on Thursday.

It was hot both on and off the field in Oakland Wednesday. Fans at the Athletics game could feel temperatures climb, while the team with the best record in the league's western division continued their fight to put numbers on the board. No matter where you sat, finding relief from the sun wasn't easy. But they weren't complaining.

"It's a perfect day to be out, I love this place, this is my second home," said A's fan Jr. Hagen. "I'll get down and kiss the concrete for you if you want."

A's fans knew it would be a hot one, so they were ready. Some slathered on the sunscreen, others chugged a beverage, and some made runs of their own.

"The hat and a lot of water," said A's fan Shanaz Mangat. "A lot of water and I take breaks to get in the shade then come right back to my seat."

In Walnut Creek, where temperatures kissed the triple digits, construction crews kept water within reach. At the Gardens at Heather Farm, finding a shady spot to kick back was like gold.

"Perfect day to be out on the water, no wind at all, no white caps" said boater Nick Tamayl.

Meanwhile in Antioch, seniors hitting the pool on Wednesday had the right idea -- not only cooling off, but doing so in the morning.

"Well, it's easier being out in this weather than in the afternoon when it's really hot," said one swimmer.

The real shame is the heat's timing. Antioch has a fun water park, perfect for this hot weather. But it doesn't open for another week. It is, after all, only May 14.

"It would be nice if they had some shorter hours or something," said Antioch resident Kelly Stephens. "But for evening time, you know, it does get really hot."

Officials hope residents will heed advice to drink a lot of water and seek shade or air conditioning in the heat of the day.

They point out that this is happening early in the season and we're not acclimated to the heat yet.

On Wednesday, CAL FIRE recruits were out training in Napa County to not only learn how to fight fires, but how to battle those blazes in extreme heat.

"For this year so far, up to May 10, we've had over 1,350 wildfires across the state," said Amy Head with CAL FIRE. "On an average year it would be closer to 700."

It's all the more reason for CAL FIRE to put its crews through one more round of training, even on a day with projected 97 degree heat.

Recruits were trained to look for shade. They say it's the difference of about 15 degrees from shade to sunlight. They also drank water, gallons of it.

ABC7 News Meteorologist Mike Nicco says the hottest day of the year unfolds around us today. Today is also a Spare the Air Day and a heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. While the cooling sea breeze and a few clouds return to the coast overnight, he says most neighborhoods will be stuffy one last night.
