SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- It's back to school for many school districts around the Bay Area.

ABC7 News was at Bryant Elementary School in San Francisco's Mission District as students and their parents gathered before class Monday morning.

It's the first day back for kids at San Francisco public schools and Mayor Ed Lee is making a special appearance in some classrooms.

"I want to say thank you to Miss Sundy for inviting me as your mayor to talk with you, so I have an hour and a half presentation I want to give you about the budget. No? Not interested?" Mayor Lee joked with the children.

Joining Mayor Lee Monday morning was outgoing superintendent Richard Carranza.

This will be Carranza's last first day of school in San Francisco before he leaves to become superintendent of Houston's public school district.
