Sea Lions 27th Anniversary

You may be familiar with the sea lions who live at Pier 39, but you may not know that they took up residence there shortly after the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

It's time to celebrate the anniversary of the sea lions choosing the K dock as their home. At first, their appearance was a phenomenon that garnered national attention. Now they're established locals.

"They're charismatic...they're just talking and shouting. You can almost just relate yourself to them," said Carrie Chen of the Aquarium of the Bay. "It looks like they're hanging out, looks like they're getting in fights with one another. They have personalities."

You can see all that personality up close this weekend. There are complimentary sea lion encounter walking tours at 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. enjoy complimentary coffee and hot chocolate and free two-hour parking.
