Dead bat tests positive for Rabies in Fremont

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- A warning about possible rabies exposure after a dead bat found at a Fremont park tested positive for the disease.

The bat was first noticed last Friday near the entrance of the Irvington Community Center on Blacow Road. Police removed it the next day.

Any person or pet that touched the bat may have been exposed to rabies and should get tested.

Rabies is a fatal disease caused by a virus that affects the brain and the nervous system. It can be prevented if the exposed person or animal receives a series of rabies vaccine shots as soon as possible after the exposure.

Anyone who touched or may have been bitten by this bat should call the Alameda County Public Health Department at (510)257-3250.
