6.4-magnitude earthquake hits near Tres Picos, Mexico

Southern Mexico has been rattled by a magnitude-6.4 quake. The temblor was felt in the southern states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.

Some tourists and residents rushed out of buildings in the colonial city of Oaxaca, but there were no immediate reports of damage there.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake struck just before 2 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) in an area of Chiapas near the Guatemalan border.

Civil Defense director Ricardo de la Cruz told local media some people suffered panic attacks, but there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.
