CHICAGO -- A man fatally shot himself after shooting a woman in a domestic-related incident at a downtown Chicago Nordstrom store on Friday evening.

Police said two people were shot on the second level of Nordstrom at 55 E. Grand in the River North neighborhood around 8:30 p.m. A man was killed and a woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, fire officials said.

Police said the shooter was the woman's current or ex-boyfriend, and the woman was a seasonal employee at Nordstrom.

"She was working up on the second floor when he approached her, fired one shot, which struck her. He then turned the gun to himself, shot and killed himself," said Chief John J. Escalante, Chicago Police Bureau of Detectives.

The store was full of shoppers on Black Friday. Witnesses said they heard shots and ran out of the store.

"Everyone was just running, and like, I'm a big guy and people were knocking me over. My feeling was just, get the hell out of there. So everybody runs out the back and I'm basically saying to people, we need to get out of the building," said Scott Balloch, a shopper.

A spokesperson for Nordstrom said in a statement late Friday: "There was a shooting at our Michigan Avenue store this evening, involving one of our employees. Our employee has been transported to the hospital. We are actively working with the Chicago Police Department, as this is an open and ongoing investigation. Our store has closed and will remain closed until further notice. Our prayers are with our employee who was involved and those who witnessed this tragic event."

The intersection at Wabash and Grand is closed as police investigate.
