Sexually violent predator living in Concord after being released from custody

CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- A man convicted of sex crimes against children has been released from a state hospital and now residents are on alert as he is living in hotels in parts of Concord.

Robert Bates is hopping from hotel to hotel because authorities have been unable to find him a permanent home for him.

Concord police wants everyone to know what he looks like since he was just released from custody.

For now, he's being allowed to live in the city as a transient. "Right now, he does not have a permanent residence so that means every four to five days he's going to be basically cycling out of motels," Cpl. Chris Blakely said.

Sources pointed ABC7 News to a room at the Valley Motel on Clayton Road, but no one answered the door.

A parishioner at the church next door said it definitely makes her nervous. "Being a repeat offender, being let out again, I'm not sure that it might not happen again," Jancie Hyatt said.

Police said Bates is being monitored around the clock. "He always has somebody with him and he also has an ankle monitor on him," Blakely said.

It's not necessarily enough for parents we talked with at a nearby elementary school. "My kids don't walk on their own, but there are kids that do and that's very scary," Sarah Stele said.

"Some kind of protocol to let the schools know that they can know, community awareness, that's the best," Anika Walker said.

Because he is classified as transient, Bates has to register with the police department every 30 days.

Concord police are working with the city to see if they can legally have him moved elsewhere.
