San Francisco gears up for 103rd annual Bay to Breakers race

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco is bracing for a flood of costumed runners who will hit the streets Sunday for the 103rd annual Bay to Breakers race.

San Francisco police say they will be cracking down on bad behavior.

More than 110,000 people are signed up for the race and thousands more will show up for the party.

Many people who signed up online, picked up their running bibs and official t-shirt at Fort Mason's Expo on Saturday. Those who haven't registered can still do so on Sunday morning.

Zappos is the main sponsor of this year's Bay to Breakers race, which is appropriate because they started in the Bay Area.

It's a really fun event that attracts some of the best runners in the world. "We have over 40 elite athletes that are coming out this year from all over the globe, competing for a price purse for over $70,000. We have some hard core runners from the elite level, but then also weekend warriors that are out here to set a personal record," Bay to Breakers spokesperson Chris Holmes said.

Organizers are hoping no one sets a personal record for drinking. You can't keep alcohol in a backpack since they are not allowed.

There are 1,000 porta potties along the 7.5 mile course.

The race begins at 8 a.m. at Main and Howard Streets.

As always, there will be plenty of street closures, so if you're coming into the city, plan ahead.

Muni plans on adding service and BART will be open for business earlier.

Communication should be a lot better this year. AT&T is bringing in an additional cell tower to handle all of the texts, tweets and postings to Instagram.

SKY 7 HD will be over the race starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
