Countdown to college football: 6 days

California kicks off the 2016 college football season on Friday night against Hawaiiin Australia (10 p.m. ET on ESPN). For everyone else, the season is at least six days away. As our countdown turns to six, we turn to the other side of San Francisco Bay to salute Stanford's Christian McCaffreyfor his FBS-high six games with 300 or more all-purpose yards last season.



McCaffrey totaled 300 or more yards against Oregon State (303), UCLA (369), Washington (300), Cal (389), USC (461 in Pac- 12 championship) and Iowa (Rose Bowl-record 368). No other FBS player had more than two such games last season. McCaffrey finished 2015 with 3,864 all-purpose yards, which broke Barry Sanders' FBS record for a single season set in 1988.



McCaffrey was the only FBS player to lead his team in rushing and receiving yards last season. He placed second in Heisman voting, but became the first non-Heisman winner to be named Associated Press Player of the Year since 2009.



Stanford opens the season against Kansas Stateon Friday, Sept. 2.

23 days:Virginia Tech has played in an FBS-best 23 straight bowl games.



24 days:In the first game of the historic rivalry, Navy beat Army 24-0.



25 days:Michigan's Desmond Howard won the Heisman 25 years ago.



26 days:Arkansas State led the nation with 26 interceptions in 2015.



27 days: Clemson's Greg Huegel led the nation with 27 field goals in 2015.



28 days: Adrian Peterson wore No. 28 for Oklahoma.



29 days: Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium opened in 1929.



30 days: Miami's Vinny Testaverde won the Heisman 30 years ago.
