BERKELEY, Calif. -- The game between No. 8 Washington State and California is scheduled to be played Friday night as planned despite poor air quality because of the fires in nearby wine country.
The Pac-12 said that the conference and schools decided Friday afternoon to play the game as scheduled at 7:30 p.m. PT. The conference said the safety of players and fans drove the decision. Cal will work with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to monitor conditions leading up to game time.
Thick smoke and ash have filled the Bay Area since the wildfires started Sunday about 50 miles north of Berkeley. The fires have killed 31 people and destroyed at least 3,500 homes and businesses.
Stanford says its game Saturday night against Oregon also is on as scheduled.
