Samsung visits ABC7 to show off new gadgets for the fall

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- With all the buzz about the new iPhone expected to be announced next week, Apple's biggest competitor is getting a jump on them. After holding events in Berlin and New York Wednesday, Samsung visited ABC7 to give us a sneak peek at some the gadgets it'll release this fall.

The Galaxy Note Edge may be the edgiest phone so far this season. We invited CNET's Jessica Dolcourt to join us when Samsung came to ABC7 for a demo.

"It's like this waterfall of glass that falls away," she said. "It tapers to a point at the right edge."

There's no smoke and mirrors here -- the display panel is actually curved. That extra space becomes a second screen of sorts for buttons, news alerts, and yes, even a ruler.

"Because I am right handed, this is easy for me," Dolocourt said "I think if you're left handed it's not gonna be as useful. Because I guess you could use it upside-down."

Or you could buy the Galaxy Note 4, the non-curved version.

Both phones have that nifty pen and a new super sharp quad HD screen. That's a lot of pixels. And here's why it matters -- Oculus, the VR headset maker that's now part of Facebook, had its hands all over the Samsung Gear VR. But the Galaxy VR doesn't have a screen.

In a video Samsung provided from its New York event, you can see the heart and soul of this headset is none other than your phone. You take your phone and install it into the goggles.

Tailor made for the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung thinks it'll make that 5.7-inch screen feel seemingly infinite.

The Korean phone giant is known for taking risks.

When the first Galaxy Note came out, it was the biggest phone we'd ever seen. Now a phone that size feels normal. And even Apple's rumored to have one in the works.

Of course, Samsung's also taking cues from Apple.

"Metal, real metal!" said Dolcourt enthusiastically. "A rim along the side. It doesn't have the super cheesy leatherette stitching along the back."

They haven't announced when the new phones will go on sale, but they're hosting a hands-on preview this Sunday, at the Best Buy store on Harrison St. in San Francisco.
