73-year-old pedestrian identified in fatal SUV rollover accident

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Police said on Wednesday that a 73-year-old Santa Rosa woman was the pedestrian killed when a vehicle collided with another vehicle, overturned and landed on her in downtown Santa Rosa Tuesday afternoon.

The woman, who died at the scene, is not yet being identified publicly until the Sonoma County coroner's office notifies her next of kin about the death.

Daniel Borbely, 72, was driving a white Ford Explorer east on Third Street at the intersection of B Street shortly before 2:30 p.m., Santa Rosa police Sgt. Mike Numainville said.

David Nelson, 94, was driving a green Volvo wagon west on Third Street and made a left turn onto southbound B Street when the collision occurred, Numainville said.

The Ford SUV flipped over and landed on the woman on the southeast corner of the intersection, which is located near the Santa Rosa Plaza shopping center.

Both drivers are Santa Rosa residents. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, police said.

Police are reviewing video from Luther Burbank Savings Bank and other businesses at the intersection as part of their investigation into the crash, Numainville said.

The collision closed the intersection until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
