El Nino leaves behind thousands of potholes on Bay Area roadways
El Nino is leaving behind thousands of potholes in the Bay Area. They stretch from the East Bay to the South Bay, with drivers saying, enough is enough.

CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- Drivers who feel like they've been hitting a lot more potholes lately are not alone.

A new report suggests the situation is worse than it's been in a long time due to El Nino.

According to ABC7 News' media partner the East Bay Times, the pothole problem is the absolute worst it has been in years.

In the East Bay, roads in Concord, Oakland and Fremont are heavily pockmarked with potholes. And there are even more rough roads in San Jose and Santa Cruz.

Drivers are saying enough is enough.

El Nino is to blame for the pesky potholes making daily commutes a little bumpier -- thousands of potholes are covering Bay Area roadways. Rain seeps into cracks and this weakens the pavement, which breaks down under the weight of cars.

"I mean it's terrible. My car already has issues as it is," said Concord resident Alexa Roach.

"I even had a friend, her breaks got bad on the potholes. You know the tires, she got flat tires and so forth, so it's pretty bad out here," said Ati Kimbell, a Concord resident.

It's an expensive problem that's in the process of being fixed one pothole at a time.

According to the East Bay Times, the city of San Jose has already filled more than 4,000 potholes this year. A typical Bay Area driver can expect to pay at least a $1,000 a year for pothole-related repairs.
