High winds topple trees, partially close SF's Great Highway

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- High winds in the Bay Area toppled trees and prompted officials to partially close San Francisco's Great Highway Sunday afternoon.

The wind really picked up and with it a lot of sand was carried over to the Great Highway specifically, south of Sloat Boulevard.

The area has since been closed to traffic, but before then a car get stuck in a mound of sand in the parking lot along Ocean Beach.

A man was stuck for a while, but with the help of someone else behind the wheel, he was finally able to help push it out of the way.

Things are supposed to get worse as winds are supposed to peak Sunday evening, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour.

Despite the wind, people still hung out along the coast. "Well I was born and raised here and it was almost ritual for me to go the beach and check out what it was like, but this is nuts," San Francisco resident Rho Meneses said.

In Pacifica, strong winds brought down a tree on Carmel Avenue and Francisco Boulevard.

A wind advisory remains in effect until midnight.
