'This is nonsense': Police, neighbors outraged over shooting of 15-month-old girl in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Oakland police are sharing new details and outrage Tuesday over the shooting of a 15-month of girl in the city's Little Saigon neighborhood Monday evening.

"If this doesn't hit you and your soul in a certain way, then that's a problem," said Roland Holmgren of the Oakland Police Department, at a press conference discussing recent violence in the city.

Other members of the department described details of the unthinkable. The moments the infant was caught in the crossfire and shot through the stomach in the area of 12th Avenue and East 15th Street.

"It's just totally unacceptable. This is nonsense" said Hologren.

Police said the family of the 15-month old was driving home when they suddenly heard a barrage of bullets. They then took cover in their vehicle until the gunfire stopped. That's when the baby, in her car seat began to cry.



It wasn't until returning home nearby, her father realized his baby had been shot by a stranger's stray bullet.

"They drove to a nearby fire station to get help."

Surveillance video from a convenience store across the street shows the moments the family frantically knocked at the door of station 4. Fire chief Reginald Freeman described how his team sprung into action.

Thankfully, crews and personnel were at the firehouse at the time.

"I'm so proud of these heroes. If it weren't for our paramedics, our EMTs... that child most likely would have lost their life."

According to Oakland Fire, an ambulance arrived just two minutes later and transported the infant to Children's Hospital.



After extensive surgery, the girl is said to be in stable condition.

Oakland police ask anyone with additional information to come forward.
