NFL, New Orleans officials hand Super Bowl host committee duties to Bay Area delegation

Monday, February 10, 2025
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Now that Super Bowl LIX is over in New Orleans, all eyes are on Santa Clara and the Bay Area to take the reins in preparation for hosting next year's game.

An event Monday morning is handing off host committee duties. Levi's Stadium is set to host Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, a decade after hosting in 2016.

This is a duty officials have already been busy getting ready for over the past year and a half.

Officials from the NFL and New Orleans passed a ceremonial football to a Bay Area delegation including San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

"From Louisiana to Levi's, now it's our turn to show what we've got," Mahan said.

Mahan is among the Bay Area officials who spent the weekend in New Orleans for the game. His office says he spent time looking in at other events in the city happening around the Super Bowl.

He also took part in two days of intense meetings with the NFL and the New Orleans committee.

Levi's Stadium is in the middle of a $200 million renovation to prepare, despite being nearly 11 years old. That includes installing a new LED field lighting system and new video boards that will be the largest 4K display in the league.

The last Super Bowl in Santa Clara was nine years ago, when the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers.

"We had a great Super Bowl in Super Bowl 50, this is going to blow the doors off," San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Louisiana leaders gave their blessing and reminded the Bay Area Host Committee that they are now on the clock.

"To San Francisco, wishing you the best of luck, may your Super Bowl be as successful and as fun as the one here in New Orleans," Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser said.

Mayor Mahan says he plans to do things a little differently this time.

"We're activating the entire region, we're showing off the technology of tomorrow and from San Francisco to San Jose, whether residents and visitors are attending the game or not, there will be something for everyone," Mahan said.

He says he's working with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Bay Area Host Committee to make sure "both endzones" of the Bay Area from San Francisco to San Jose are safe, clean and activated in time for the big game.

"We've had a few rough years coming out of the pandemic, but we're well into our fourth quarter comeback," he said.

The South Bay will also host some matches for the FIFA World Cup next year.

Zaileen Janmohamed, President and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee, says it's the first time any region ever has hosted these global events in the same year.

"We're doing this because we also believe in the power of sport to do so much more," Janmohamed said. "And I'm here to tell you that we will be ready."

The Bay Area Host Committee estimates hosting the Super Bowl could have an economic impact anywhere from $370 million to $630 million, with up to about $160 million of that just in Santa Clara County.
