SUV allows 360-degree camera view

LOS ANGELES There are four cameras: one in back, one in front, and one in each side mirror. On the dashboard screen, the images are projected along with an outline of the car. It's as though you're looking down from 10 feet above your own car.

The system works in either reverse or drive, as long as your speed is under about six miles per hour. The split-screen image shows both the front or rear view, as well as the all-around image. The tightest parallel parking moves can be done with ease. No more scraped wheels or bumping into other vehicles.

A dark parking garage can be a scary place, especially for women driving alone. With this system, a nice wide view of your surroundings is available as you pull into a spot.

The high-tech systems up the ante a little in small premium crossovers, as does one other new technology: paint that removes its own blemishes. A new clear coating can make light scratches and swirl marks disappear.

Then again, by being able to see around the car with the cameras, you really shouldn't be scraping up against anything.
