Quakes beat Beckham, Galaxy in Oakland

OAKLAND, CA Ryan Cochrane scored his first goal of the season in the 90th minute for the Earthquakes (4-9-6). Newly acquired Arturo Alvarez also scored to give San Jose's league-worst offense its first three-goal match of the year. Cochrane jumped on the rebound of a shot by Huckerby and guided it into a net left unguarded by Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin, who had come off his line to unsuccessfully try to know away a cross. Los Angeles (6-8-5) had its winless streak extended to seven matches. Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, the league's top two individual scorers, scored for the Galaxy. David Beckham delivered a pinpoint cross that Donovan headed home in the 42nd minute. But it was Huckerby, another English import signed last month by the Earthquakes, whose play put San Jose on top. Huckerby began the play that put the Earthquakes up in the eighth minute by delivering a short cross from the left side to Scott Sealy, who made a one-touch pass to an onrushing Alvarez. Alvarez, a six-year veteran brought in Monday by San Jose from FC Dallas in exchange for a first-round draft pick and cash, used the outside of his left foot to guide a 12-yard shot across goal and inside the far post. Huckerby doubled San Jose's advantage in the 40th minute when he collected a long pass from Eric Denton and beat Los Angeles defender Chris Klein to open up a free run at goal. Cronin got his left hand on Huckerby's close-range shot but couldn't stop it. Buddle, who tallied a hat trick in Los Angeles' 3-0 win over San Jose on June 14, tied the score by faking two Earthquakes defenders into one another near the top of the penalty box and drilling a 14-yard shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
