REVIEW: 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'

Rated PG-13: (Sci-fi disaster images, violence)
We have done such a bad job with this planet, that aliens watching us have decided to clean house and give the planet a chance to start over. Instead of a peaceful welcome, America responds with military action that only worsens the situation.

Keanu Reeves plays the role of the alien visitor (Klaatu) in this 1951 classic sci-fi remake. He arrives on earth with his massive robot protector.

Enter Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), who becomes a liaison of sorts. She is the only person on earth that Klaatu seems to trust.

It is she who is called upon to attempt to change the Earth's fate.

Although Reeves lacks the acting ability to justify some of the roles he's played, somehow this movie fits him.

However, I can't say it's a good movie, and I also can't say he's a good actor.

I know very little of the original version, but I am aware of the powerful moment when the alien first arrives with his automaton protector.

Beyond that, there was mostly flashing lights and expensive special effects.

The direction was bad, the acting was bad, the movie? Yes, it was bad, too.

The one good thing about it?  I do have the urge to see the original, just to find out how it was supposed to be done.
