Man arrested after shooting near Highland Hospital

OAKLAND, CA

The shooting was reported at about 5:55 p.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of East 31st Street, Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason said.

An officer arrived to find the victim, a 22-year-old Oakland man, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Highland Hospital, less than a block away, and was in critical condition this morning, Thomason said.

While attending to the wounded man, the officer saw a suspect who shot at a second victim before running away, Thomason said. He did not know if the second victim was hit by the gunfire.

The suspect was eventually apprehended and identified as Malvin Bell, a San Leandro resident. Bell was booked into Alameda County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, Thomason said.

Three other suspects are still at large. Thomason did not have any description of the suspects as of this morning.
