Before Judge Robert Perry handed down Mehserle's sentence, he said that he felt that Grant was indeed resisting arrest, and that's what led to the fatal New Year's Day shooting. Judge Perry also denied a request by Mehserle's attorney for a new trial.
In court, Mehserle expressed remorse. Through tears he said that he wished he could bring Grant back -- though Mehserle did say that the whole situation had to do with Grant's actions and his reaction to it.
He said his family has had numerous death threats since the verdict.
Cell phone cameras caught the chaotic scene on the BART platform that night. Since then, this trial has sparked a lot of rhetoric and several protests. Both sides have mentioned appeals.
With the two-year sentence and time served, Mehserle may serve less than 10 months. The Grant family and their lawyer were not pleased with today's developments.
The defense was also not pleased with today's sentence. With Mehserle being sent to prison, his lawyer, Michael Rains, remained defiant.
