Local inventor comes up with new idea for mailboxes

Mark Williams has what he calls the Rebounding Mailbox Post
OGEMAW COUNTY But one Ogemaw County road commissioner thinks he's found the solution.

Mark Williams has served as a road commissioner for five years. The No. 1 complaint he hears has to do with damaged mailboxes. That's why he dreamed up what he calls the Rebounding Mailbox Post.

When snow from the road gets pushed off onto the shoulder, oftentimes mailbox posts get broken or bent. But with Williams' invention, the posts bounce back up.

Williams tsays it took a year and a half to develop, largely because he had to get the spring just right. Then this past June he was able to get the tough mailbox post patented.

So far Williams says he's sold around 50 mailboxes, but he says he hopes to do even better once people learn about his new idea. He says he came up with the idea after hearing countless complaints as a road commissioner and after trying to repair his own damaged mailbox during the winter.

"I went to my local store and there was just nothing there, just your typical mailbox wood post," he said. "I said, 'I've got to come up with something that will, you know, fight back a little bit.'

"The whole thing gives. It goes all four directions, so the snow comes, it hits it, it bounces away. It's worked well."
