Hiking season in Yosemite is just around the corner. On Saturday the park began its pre-season lottery for Half Dome permits.

The 14-mile round trip hike to the iconic piece of granite is among the most popular in Yosemite National Park.

In the month-long lottery, the park issues 225 day-hike permits for each day of the hiking season. This year the season is expected to run from late May to the middle of October.

If you apply now, people can apply for up to six permits (six people) and for up to seven dates.

Permit applications can be submitted at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777.
