The girls' basketball team at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland has been denied the chance to defend their basketball title. The team was disqualified from the playoffs because they played one too many games this year.

Despite launching a petition drive last week, the team was not included on the playoff schedule issued Sunday.

Monday the O'Dowd's principal issued a statement saying: "We are disappointed the girls' team was not included in the playoff bracket."

But, the principal added that she was: "Proud of their effort to seek inclusion in the tournament."

According to Bishop O'Dowd student Dominic Drury, "The Bishop O'Dowd boys won NCS championship (the same tournament) that girls got disqualified from. When they won, the boys gave their first place medals to the girls."
