Berkeley to hold debate on proposed soda tax

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- There will be a debate in Berkeley Monday over the pros and cons of a tax on soda.

The city council has proposed a one cent per ounce tax on sugar-sweetened drinks, and it's on the Nov. ballot.

Berkeley stands to make about $1.5 million from the tax, which would go into the general fund to pay for city services and programs.

Just a simple majority from voters will put the proposal on the books.

The debate begins at noon in city council chambers.
