Arson investigation underway after another fire on East Bay trail

PLEASANT HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- Police in the East Bay are looking into a fire that could be connected to a string of arsons along a popular trail.

This time, the fire broke out along the East Bay MUD trail. This isn't the same trail that has had all the arsons, but residents are worried maybe this is the work of the arsonist, and that maybe he has broadened his target

The latest fire started at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the East Bay MUD Trail in Pleasant Hill. It was small, 15 by 15 feet, they got it out quickly. But it has sparked concerns about the bigger picture, the arsons on walking trails in the East Bay.

"So, it's definitely a concern of ours that they continue to occur and we're definitely going to investigate it and see if we can find out what may have started it," said Contra Costa Co. Fire Protection District Batt. Chief Keith Cormier

There have been about a dozen fires in the last couple of months. No one has been hurt but there has been some property damage, including a car that was destroyed by fire. Investigators say witnesses heard people in the area of last night's fire, but didn't see them.

No arrests have been made.
