Creed singer Scott Stapp claims he's broke and homeless

Scott Stapp's band Creed was once one of the most popular music groups in the United States, but the singer now claims he is penniless and living at a Holiday Inn.

In a 15-minute video posted to Facebook Wednesday, Stapp said an audit into his personal finances and record company revealed that money had been stolen and royalties had not been paid.

"There are people that have taken advantage and stolen from me," he said. "And they're trying to discredit me, slander me."

The video was made at a Holiday Inn, according to Stapp. He claims the IRS has frozen his assets several times in the past few weeks and someone had also drained his bank accounts, leaving him broke. Stapp said in the video he did not have enough money for gas or food and had recently been living in his truck.

Stapp, who has battled with alcoholism in the past, refutes rumors that he is on drugs.

"I'm sober as can be," he said.

He said he doesn't understand why, but he is "under some vicious attack" and that unnamed wrongdoers have threatened him if he were to go public with his situation. In the video, he vowed to fight the attacks and said he is looking for "a good lawyer."

"The truth will prevail," he said. "The truth will come out."

Creed has sold over 28 million albums worldwide, according to Variety, and topped the charts in the late 1990s with hits like "With Arms Wide Open" and "Higher." The band had fallen out of favor in recent years. A 2013 Rolling Stone poll named Creed the worst band of the nineties.

According to the Miami Herald, Stapp's wife, Jaclyn, recently filed for divorce in Florida, where the couple lives with their three children.
