Seed developer from the Netherlands wins World Food Prize for introducing high quality disease-resistant vegetable seeds

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The founder of a Dutch seed company is the winner of the 2019 World Food Prize.

Simon Groot helped small farmers around the world escape poverty through improved vegetable production.

His work led to fast-growing, high-yielding crops that were resistant to local diseases and other stresses.

Groot will be awarded $250,000.
