SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A funeral mass took place Monday for San Francisco Archbishop Emeritus John Quinn.
The service was held at Saint Mary's Cathedral on Gough Street. Quinn passed away June 22 after a lengthy illness. He served as archbishop of San Francisco from 1977 to 1995 and built a reputation as an advocate of social justice and a leader in the liberalization of the Catholic Church.
In his retirement, Quinn lectured and wrote two books on reforming the papacy and was working on a third when he died at age 88.
