SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Golden State Warriors' run in the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers is now necessitating some flag choreography at San Francisco City Hall. The flag pole outside is now pulling double duty.
San Francisco has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for the Golden State Warriors. City hall lights up at night in team colors and a "This is Warriors Ground" banner hangs from Mayor Ed Lee's balcony.
A team flag waves above. But on Tuesday morning, the Dubs flag came down. And in its place, a rainbow flag went up to kick off LGBT Pride Month.
"The Pride flag is important and I think maybe they should do both of them," said Warriors fan Dan Nazareta.
The mayor says the city has a game plan. To celebrate both pride and the NBA Finals, they'll swap out the flags on game days.
"Of course it will be up tonight for the game," Lee said.
Changes are also planned for the LED lights around city hall.
"They'll be in rainbow colors for Pride month and we'll have the Warriors colors at different times," said the mayor. "So you'll know we're celebrating a multitude of different events in the city."
ABC7 News spoke with Gary Virginia, president of the San Francisco Pride Board of Directors, about how he feels about sharing the spotlight with the NBA Finals.
"Not a conflict at all," he said. "The rainbow Pride flag was founded here in San Francisco for our parade by Gilbert Baker and those rainbow colors are meant to convey inclusion."
In fact, a famous sports figure will be front and center at this year's Pride parade serving as grand marshal. Who is it? Well, that's being kept a secret for now.
