HAYWARD, Calif. -- An Oakland man was sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison for his premeditated attempted murder conviction for shooting a former San Lorenzo High School student who had beaten up his son last year.

Darren Andre Cleveland, 49, was also convicted of shooting from a vehicle with an enhancement for causing great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Alameda County prosecutors said Cleveland spent a number of weeks hunting down the 16-year-old victim after the youth was expelled from school

for beating up Cleveland's 15-year-old son.

Cleveland eventually located the 16 year old on May 28, 2014, while he was walking to the REACH Ashland Youth Center in unincorporated San Leandro and struck him on his right thigh with a baseball bat, prosecutors said.

The 16-year-old boy fled, but Cleveland chased him down in his car and fired at least seven shots at the youth, hitting him once in the shoulder, according to prosecutors.
