Jerrypop in San Francisco produces fun, zany popcorn

SAN FRANCISCO -- From tech to pop, owner and operator of "Jerrypop," Jerry Haagsma, infuses big flavor into his bags of unique popcorn.

In 2015 Haagsma earned the nickname "Jerrypop" for showing up to gatherings with handcrafted popcorn. His love for popcorn runs deep, and he hopes to share his passion for the snack through his brand.

"I basically produce craft popcorn, all kinds of zany flavors like PB and J and habanero ranch," said Haagsma. "And I sell them at pop ups and on shelves at bars and breweries and markets."

He added, "I thought I would be sick of popcorn by now, but I still am eating all the crumbs that aren't big enough to go into the bags as like my lunch on production day."

Jerry gave up his career in tech to pursue popcorn making full time.

"I have been making popcorn as a hobby for about 10 years now. I got into it back in college, my roommate's parents made a run to the grocery store for him...and they brought back a 10-pound drum of popcorn kernels," explained Haagsma. "We kind of took it on as a challenge to get through the 10 pounds of kernels before the end of school. And you can only eat so much like plain buttered and salted popcorn, so we started experimenting with different flavors and seasonings."

In addition to being delicious, Jerrypop is environmentally conscious.

"Since the start of my business, every piece of packaging I've used has been fully compostable," said Haagsma. "I want to make sure that at least my impact on the environment is as mitigated as possible as low as possible, so I try to use the most sustainable practices."

He added, "One of my main goals is to just make people happy...and like even when I was in tech, I did a lot of front-end engineering work because I am drawn to providing a delightful user experience. I really like delighting people or giving them something funny and zany that they didn't expect."
