Pothole causing traffic issues in San Francisco amid heavy rain

A sinkhole has formed at the intersection of Lombard and Gough Streets in San Francisco as heavy rain continues.

A large pothole has formed at the intersection of Lombard and Gough Street in San Francisco as heavy rain continues, SFFD says.

The San Francisco Fire Department said it's about five feet by four feet. It's been causing a major headache for drivers trying to get around it to get to work or school.

SFFD originally tweeted that the hole was a sinkhole but later gave an update that it was a pothole.

ABC7 crews on scene saw multiple Waymo autonomous vehicles driving straight through at full speed, ignoring Public Works vehicles trying to block off the area.

Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area and to expect some traffic delays while repairs are being made. One crew told ABC7 the pothole was actually a failed trench.

Elsewhere in the city, there was flooding at 18th and Folsom, but a Good Samaritan came to save the day and unclogged the drain with his own set of rainboots before any Public Works officials showed up.

"Oh I just cleared the drain, you know people in the city when you see a drain clogged, you want to help out, just clear it out, people walking through here and that water is pretty is deep, just clear it out," the man said.

North Bay residents on high alert for flooding from atmospheric river

Ahead of Tuesday's atmospheric river event, Mill Valley residents are watching the creeks very closely as Marin County is on Flood Watch alert.

The Arroyo Corte Madera del Presidio Creek is one of the main creeks flowing through Mill Valley, which runs alongside many homes and businesses. Residents were watching the creek closely on Monday ahead of the atmospheric river.

The Mill Valley Police Department sent a weather advisory to all its residents urging them to be prepared following the National Weather Service Flood Watch alert for Marin County and the City of Mill Valley.

Earlier Monday, crews worked to remove a large oak tree that fell just outside the Steele Lane Elementary School in Santa Rosa.

With strong winds expected through Tuesday, officials say it's likely even more will tumble.

"We anticipate certainly some roadside sluffing, debris in the roadways. So again when people are driving be really careful and conscious out there," said Cyndi Foreman, Sonoma County Fire District Division Chief.

The Southern Marin Fire District is ready to deploy an additional five engines, and the local office of emergency services water team is on standby.
