Officials detail issues with water system as Tracy fire continues
The Tracy Medline warehouse's failed sprinkler and problems getting water out of the hydrants stalled firefighters' response, officials said.

TRACY, Calif. (KGO) -- A fire destroyed a medical equipment warehouse in Tracy, California and sent thick black smoke pouring into the sky Thursday and prompted evacuations of other nearby facilities as authorities fought to get the blaze under control.

The fire ignited at the large distribution center for Medline, a major medical-surgical products provider. It spread across the street into a FedEx facility, where crews were able to stop it, according to Fire Chief Randall Bradley, of the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority.

Officials evacuated a large portion of the area as the wind heightened the risk of spreading embers, said Sgt. Michael Richards, from the city's police department. The 1 million-square-foot (93,000-square-meter) warehouse is in a massive industrial park that also houses fulfillment and distribution centers for Amazon, Home Depot and FedEx.

Medline said all of its employees and other personnel at the site were accounted for.

Medline distribution center a total loss, San Joaquin County Fire says

Nicole Boswell from San Joaquin County Fire Authority, whose jurisdiction covers Tracy and its unincorporated areas, said Tracy's Medline distribution center building is considered a total loss.

Boswell aslso said the neighboring FedEx building is threated due to high 25 mph winds.

Wooden pallets in front of the FedEx warehouse have burned.

Boswell also said that multiple big trailers have caught fire but did not specify which business they were associated with.

He echoed authorities in urging residents to stay out of the area and gave insight on Tracy's large industrial complex.

Arriola said the Medline distribution center was approximately 1 million square feet and played a key role in distributing supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All Medline employees at Tracy facility where fire broke out accounted for, company says

Medline Industries released a statement Thursday saying that all Medline employees at the Tracy facility have been accounted for.

In a statement, Medline said: "Medline can confirm a fire is occurring at our Tracy, California distribution facility. All Medline employees and on-site personnel are accounted for. The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority. We are coordinating closely with local authorities and first responders as we assess the fire's impact and will share more details as they become available."

Tracy police, firefighters aware of other fires in the area

Tracy police posted to Facebook that they are aware of multiple fires in the area and are working with South San Joaquin County Fire Authority to address any evacuation needs.

They say authorities are in the Tracy Hills area but currently there is no threat to residents.
