SFPD: Bicyclist killed by bus snagged wheel in streetcar tracks

SAN FRANCISCO -- A 47-year-old bicyclist who died in a collision with a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus on Sunday afternoon fell after his wheel got caught in streetcar tracks on Market Street and he was run over by the bus, police said Tuesday.

Mark Heryer of Berkeley died when he fell while cycling between two westbound buses and was run over by the bus's rear wheel. The accident was reported at 3:23 p.m. in the 500 block of Market Street, near Sutter Street, police said.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose said Monday that the 46-year-old bus driver will undergo drug and alcohol testing.

The accident was the first of two involving a bicyclist that day.

At about 4 p.m., a woman was injured when she pulled behind and hit a horse trailer towed by a southbound 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck in the intersection of The Embarcadero and Chestnut Street, police said.

The 46-year-old woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with head and eye trauma, a collapsed lung and internal bleeding, police said. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition released a statement following Sunday's collisions expressing their condolences to Heryer's family as well as wishing the injured bicyclist a quick and thorough recovery.

They called on city leaders to make sure they are preventing bicyclist and pedestrian deaths as quickly as possible through engineering, education and enforcement.
