ONLYONABC7NEWS.COM: Fremont parents concerned over dangerous crosswalk after child struck by car

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- There is concern about what some consider a dangerous crosswalk near a school in Fremont after a driver allegedly hit a child on Monday. A crossing guard who was also injured there last year, says safety needs to be improved. It's a story you'll see only on ABC7 News.

The crosswalk is located at Thornton Avenue and San Pedro Drive near Cabrillo Elementary School.

Joseph Lopez is so worried that he is putting in his own time to help kids cross the intersection.

Parents and kids are in shock over learning a kindergarten student was struck by a car that was making a left turn as he, his mother and two younger siblings were accompanying him to school.

PTA President Vanessa Campos from Cabrillo Elementary School was there to console the child's mother. "It just upsets me, and it upset some of the parents that were there helping out. So, that was scary to see her upset, and of course we were concerned for the child because at the moment, we didn't know the condition of the child," Campos said.

Paul Silva used to be the cross guard on Thornton Avenue, until he was hit by a car last September while on duty. He now walks his grandson to and from school.

Fremont police said Thornton Avenue is a state highway, so Caltrans is in charge of signals and crosswalks.

Caltrans did not return ABC7 News' call Tuesday to see what can be done to improve safety in the area. "Maybe they should put an arrow, no left turn, between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., maybe 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to keep that from happening. Two times is two too many," Silva said.

The school superintendent issued a statement, saying: "The ability of students and families to travel to and from school safely is of great concern. We are ready to assist in finding solutions both there and at any other location where safety is in question."

"There should be a guard over there so they help us cross the street because these days they're not stopping at the stopping signs," parent Sravani Yemula said.
