A transient man was rescued from an island in Coyote Creek in Milpitas by emergency personnel Thursday.

MILPITAS, Calif. (KGO) -- Crews worked to rescue a transient man who was trapped on an island in Coyote Creek in Milpitas Thursday morning.

Rescuers from the San Jose and Milpitas fire departments responded to an area north of state Highway 237 near North McCarthy Boulevard shortly before 11 a.m. A rescue boat was sent to pull the man out.

The island is normally a peninsula, but recent heavy rain caused the creek to rise enough that the man was not able to leave.

Police said the man was not injured. "His body temperature is probably low. We don't know that yet. He's being assessed right now and he probably will be taken to a local hospital," San Jose Fire Department Captain Mitch Matlos said.

In Santa Clara County, a man was praised by the sheriff's office for rescuing a man along the Los Gatos Trail Wednesday.

More than 20 people have been saved by the Urban Search and Rescue team in the Bay Area over the past week.
