SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- In the Bay Area, people gathered outside Walnut Creek's oldest gay bar to show their support for the victims of the Orlando massacre.

An emotional memorial paid tribute to the victims of the shooting.

Mourners held candles and waved rainbow flags, vowing not to be destroyed by hate.

Organizers wanted to gather here because Club 1220 was one of the first gay establishments in Contra Costa County. It opened 40 years ago.

"Our only choice to go to another place where we could drink with one of our own kind was San Francisco. So we did open here, I think we were all blown away by how many people lived out here, how many people would come to the bar, but we did have to create a very safe environment," Club 1220 owner John Crovo said.

In Orlando, the gunman invaded that safe haven.

Crovo is increasing security. "No more backpacks, no more coming in. We're now inspecting purses. I think we're all tuning up our own innocence, you know. And it isn't. We're in a different world nowadays."

People here say that no matter what, love wins.
