A homeless outreach team summoned police, who tried to subdue him by shooting beanbag rounds at him. But officials say Gongora got up and charged at police and two officers opened fire.
Gongora was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Some witnesses in the area said the man was confused and didn't speak English and disputed the account by police. Police held a news conference late Friday morning to disclose more details about the shooting.
