BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn -- Authorities said two New York City Police Department officers and another man have been shot in Brooklyn.

NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said the officers were shot just before 3:20 a.m. Saturday near Malcolm X Boulevard and Lexington Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant and transported to Kings County Hospital.

Both are plainclothes, anti-crime officers assigned to the 81st Precinct.

One was shot in his protective vest, but the bullet did not penetrate it. He suffered blunt force trauma. The other was shot below his vest in the right hip, but neither injury is believed to be life-threatening.

Both were alert at the hospital, Bratton said.

The incident began when two housing police officers responded to shots fired at Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. When they approached a suspect, who was in a vehicle, Bratton said, the suspect pointed a revolver at them, then fled in the car. The officers followed the vehicle and called for back-up.

At the corner of Malcolm X and Lexington, the suspect, who was traveling the wrong way, rammed a marked patrol car, and several officers then fired at the suspect, hitting him multiple times.

A .357 gun was found in the suspect's car with five spent shell casings.

One of the officers shot has nine years with the force, while the other has three years. The father of one of the officers also was an NYPD officer and was shot in the line of duty years ago; he was saved by his protective vest, too, according to Bratton.

Officials said the other shooting victim was transported to Brookdale Hospital. Bratton said the suspect is a 34-year-old, likely from New Jersey, named Jamal Funes.

The names of the officers have not be released.
