LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (KGO) -- Anyone planning a summer trip to Lake Tahoe is being warned to watch where they park, as fines for illegal parking are climbing sharply in some of the region's most popular destinations.
Officials say parking fees near Kings Beach can reach up to $40 a day during peak periods. But drivers who try to avoid paying for parking lots and park illegally could face a much steeper penalty. In high traffic areas such as Kings Beach and Donner Lake, fines for improper parking can cost as much as $450.

Visitors may also find fewer available spots this year. Several Tahoe communities are creating resident-only parking zones in busy neighborhoods to reduce congestion and keep access open for locals.
