ROHNERT PARK, Calif. (KGO) -- Police are searching for a driver who fled the scene after hitting two girls in a hit-and-run crash in Rohnert Park.

Officers returned to the scene Saturday, hours after the incident. Police said the children were riding together on an electric scooter in a bike lane when they were struck by a driver Friday night at Bodway Parkway and Waterside Lane.

Surveillance video shows the vehicle involved leaving the area immediately after the collision. According to police, the suspect's vehicle resembles a 2004-to-2009 Dodge Durango SUV.

One of the children suffered major injuries, police said.

Neighbor Kimberly Brasil said she heard the crash shortly before 9:30 p.m. Friday.

"It's just absolutely devastating. The fact that that person didn't stop is just mind-boggling to me," Brasil said. "I was up in my room watching TV. I heard a big pound. We are known in the neighborhood for people hitting cars on the streets. That's what I thought happened."

Brasil said she called 911 after looking outside.

"I came out to the balcony and saw that there was a scooter and assumed it was two kids," Brasil said. "It was pretty bad. I heard one girl crying in pain."

Neighbors said speeding is a frequent problem along the road, even with flashing lights designed to signal when pedestrians are crossing.

"People from Petaluma Hill Road cut through our neighborhood, and they don't pay attention to slowing down or stopping at the stop signs for the children sometimes," said Tommy Cordova.

"People speed up and pass even when the lights are flashing," Brasil said.

Some neighbors also said children riding scooters do not always follow safety measures.

"What happens is the scooter kids sometimes don't stop and use the indicator lights," Cordova said.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in identifying the driver involved in Friday night's hit-and-run. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
