San Quentin investigating possible case of hantavirus in 38-year-old male inmate

SAN QUENTIN, Calif (KGO) -- San Quentin Rehabilitation Center confirmed on Wednesday that it's investigating a possible case of hantavirus in a 38-year-old male inmate. The incident was first reported on Monday as a person showing symptoms consistent with potential exposure.

Officials say that, out of an abundance of caution, the facility where the person was housed has been thoroughly decontaminated. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is awaiting additional testing from state and federal laboratories to confirm a diagnosis.

A spokesperson with the CDCR says the health and safety of the incarcerated population and staff remain CDCR's top priority.

No quarantine has been announced at this time, and the inmate is said to be in stable condition.

The rehabilitation center has a medical unit, but a prison representative told ABC7 Eyewitness News that she didn't know whether the inmate was still being treated there or had been returned to his regular housing facility. They also said the potential case wasn't believed to be the result of a person-to-person spread.

Officials said medical staff are continuing to monitor the situation and conducting additional assessments for any incarcerated persons or staff.
