Stalled damaged semi-truck prompts power shutoff for thousands in San Jose, road closures

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose firefighters are on the scene, and PG&E shut off power to thousands of customers Thursday due to a semi-truck with a damaged axle at risk of rolling over.

The semi is stalled at 1st Street and E. Alma Avenue. San Jose Fire Department says the power was shut off to at least 7,000 customers at the time of the incident because the semi was at risk of damaging a nearby power pole if it were to roll over. The semi is hauling nearly 80,000 pounds of scrap metal.

The fire department said the nearby Sacred Heart Community Service building was evacuated as a precaution.

Officials estimated power to be restored around 4:45 p.m. As of 2:35 p.m., at least 3,800 customers were still without power.

Traffic is impacted in all directions as crews work to tow away the vehicle. Drivers are asked to use alternative routes.

No injuries have been reported.
