Damaged, tilted semi-truck prompts power shutoff for thousands in SJ

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose firefighters were on the scene, and PG&E shut off power to thousands of customers for hours on Thursday due to a semi-truck with a damaged axle that was at risk of rolling over.

Officials say the semi-truck crashed around 9:30 a.m. when the driver tried to make a turn, and the rear became dislodged.

It was stalled at 1st Street and E. Alma Avenue. San Jose Fire Department says the power was shut off around 1:30 p.m. to at least 7,000 to 8,000 customers because the semi was at risk of damaging a nearby power pole if it rolled over. The semi was hauling nearly 80,000 pounds of scrap metal.

Shortly before 5 p.m., authorities said the truck had finally been stabilized and a tow truck was working to safely remove it.

The fire department said the nearby Sacred Heart Community Service building was evacuated as a precaution.

Power was restored about 4:40 p.m., but officials said a new outage occurred that impacted 3,770 customers. An estimated time for power to be restored is 8 p.m., according to PG&E's outage map.

Traffic was impacted in all directions as crews worked to tow away the vehicle. No injuries have been reported.
