SF work crew member hit, killed by garbage truck

SAN FRANCISCO -- A driver of a garbage truck fatally stuck a man on a work crew for San Francisco's Human Services Agency in the city's Bayview District Thursday morning.

Police and fire officials received a report shortly after 9 a.m. about a person struck and injured by a San Francisco Department of Public Works truck near the intersection of Jerrold Avenue and Quint Street, SFDPW spokeswoman Rachel Gordon said.

The truck was out on a routine pickup route for illegal dumping when the driver accidentally ran over and killed a member of the crew, Gordon said.

The deceased man has been identified only as a member of a work crew overseen by the city's Human Services Agency, Gordon said. The man was initially described as a city employee, but Gordon said that is not the case.

He died at the scene and the medical examiner's office responded, San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.

The truck driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating in the investigation, according to Gordon.

The cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation by the San Francisco Police Department, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and the city's Department of Public Works, Gordon said.
