Southbound I-280 section in SF closed through weekend
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A portion of southbound I-280 in San Francisco was closed last night. The on-ramps and sections of King and Mariposa streets were also shut down. This will last through the long holiday weekend.
This is a big project that only affects Southbound I-280 traffic. What they will be doing is removing a major hinge the holds two pieces of concrete. That construction will take place on I-280 near Cesar Chavez Street in San Francisco.
They have to demolish enough of the concrete to get to that hinge and then replace it with one four times the size of the old one.
Caltrans says that hinge was damaged perhaps because of too much stress due to earthquakes or other events. That section of I-280 was built in the 1960s.
In order to complete the southbound project, CalTans must close several on ramps at Mariposa Street and 18th, 6th Street and Brannan, and the King Street on-ramp, close to AT&T Park. Keep in mind the Giants are in town.
Once that project is complete, there will be two other similar ones, affecting northbound 280 over the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.
CalTrans says it's much better to do these projects over these long weekends than during the week when everyone is trying to get to work.
