Two men are dead after San Francisco police responded to a report of an aggravated assault and fired their weapons Thursday night.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Two men are dead after San Francisco police responded to a report of an aggravated assault and fired their weapons Thursday just a block away from UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.

According to SFPD, when officers arrived around 8 p.m. near Owens and Mariposa streets they confronted two men and that's when the shooting occurred.

One of the men died on scene and another was taken to Zuckerberg General Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

SFPD says it's still trying to determine if both men were shot by officers or if they died as a result of the reported assault.

The incident is being investigated by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office; the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division (ISD); the SFPD Internal Affairs Division (IAD); the Department of Police Accountability (DPA); and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME), police say.

As part of SFPD's commitment to transparency and accountability, the department says a town hall meeting regarding this officer-involved shooting will be held within ten days.
