SUV lands on top of fire hydrant after fatal accident in Fremont

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- A stretch of one of Fremont's busiest roads remained closed Friday afternoon following a fatal DUI collision involving a pedestrian and the driver of a sports utility vehicle.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. Friday morning on Argonaut Way between Mowry Avenue and Sacramento Avenue. Fremont Police say the pedestrian, an adult male, died at the scene after being struck by another man who was driving a Nissan Rogue. The driver also hit a fire hydrant and slammed into the back of a cargo trailer.

Investigators were still trying to pinpoint the sequence of events, as of Friday afternoon, and have not determined if the driver initially hit the pedestrian, who appeared to be unloading items, or if he hit the cargo trailer first.

The driver, who was taken to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries, has been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, according to Sgt. Ricardo Cortes with the Fremont Police Department. He will be booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin after being cleared by medical personnel.

ABC7 News was at the scene as police launched a drone to help gather evidence to assist investigators with the case. Residents and workers nearby tell us this section of Argonaut Way tends to get congested during the morning and evening commute hours. They were saddened to learn of the pedestrian's death and hope that this will force other drivers to be more aware of their surroundings.
