He became a force in the 1980s for pushing conservative Christian ideals in American politics alongside fundamentalist giants like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.
San Francisco is not only celebrating Valentine's Day on Wednesday, but this week the city is celebrating 20 years since the "Winter of Love" -- the monumental time when the city challenged state law and began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
"We felt like equal human beings": One of the couples who took part on the historic day of first same-sex marriages in San Francisco reflects on the past 20 years.
"This is the best Christmas present and pre-anniversary present for me and my husband," says one Bay Area man, a devout Catholic. "We've been waiting for decades to finally be recognized as followers of Christ with no judgement from the leaders of the church."
"She was out there and fighting for equal rights and social justice all the time during the AIDS crisis," said Andrea Aiello, Castro Business District executive director.
"The fact that this decision is essentially saying that even if a state provides protections against bigotry, national religious interests will trump that. That's incredibly concerning," said San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu.
